Cataract refers to a condition where the lens, which refracts light to form an image on the retina, becomes cloudy due to factors such as aging, uveitis, diabetes, etc., causing decreased vision or symptoms where objects appear overlapped. Since cataracts progress gradually, symptoms do not appear immediately noticeable, and in extreme cases, it can lead to blindness. Currently, surgery is the only treatment for cataracts, but the difficulty of surgery is not the same for all patients.
Classification and Symptoms
When cataracts occur, the lens becomes cloudy, and light entering the eye cannot properly pass through the lens, causing symptoms where the visual field appears blurred.

Diagnosis Method
Diagnosis is possible through slit lamp examination by dilating the pupil for observation.
Slit lamp examination: A test that investigates the condition of the cornea and lens using a straight beam of light
Treatment Method
If detected early and there is no significant impact on daily life, drug treatment may be chosen to slow the progression of the disease,
but if the disease has already progressed considerably, it can be treated with intraocular lens insertion surgery, which removes the cloudy lens through ultrasound and fills the space with an artificial lens.
The difficulty of cataract surgery varies for each patient, and particularly when mature, complicated, or traumatic cataracts occur, high-level surgical skills are required as surgery may need to extend to the retina.
Additionally, when performing cataract surgery, an artificial lens to be inserted must be selected, which is determined by considering the patient's lifestyle, accompanying eye diseases, and the desired level of vision after surgery.
Since the pattern of vision varies depending on the artificial lens, careful selection considering various factors comprehensively is essential.

Artificial Lens Insertion Example
Monofocal vs Multifocal Artificial Lens
During cataract surgery, a monofocal or multifocal artificial lens to be inserted into the eye can be selected by comprehensively considering the individual condition and preferences of the patient.
Monofocal Artificial Lens
Suitable when presbyopia has not occurred and only cataracts have progressed. If presbyopia is accompanied but a monofocal lens is chosen for surgery, the inconvenience of still needing to wear glasses or magnifying glasses after surgery may follow.
Multifocal Artificial Lens
A surgery that simultaneously treats aging and cataracts, with the advantage of being able to see both distance and near vision clearly after surgery, but it may appear somewhat blurry compared to monofocal artificial lenses, and surgery may not be possible depending on accompanying eye diseases.

Lens Change Process According to Age
The essential conditions for successful cataract surgery are precise surgical techniques and appropriate artificial lens selection.
The One Seoul Eye Clinic's Retinal/Glaucoma Clinic has rich experience in cataract surgery for various situations, so effective results can be expected.
Artificial Lens Vision Management
The One Seoul Eye Clinic ensures that patients with retinal diseases can also receive surgery safely and with peace of mind through sufficient explanation and differentiated skills and know-how to achieve the best results.
We will solve high-difficulty problems related to cataract surgery such as complications that occur during or after cataract surgery, artificial lens exchange and repositioning.

High-Difficulty Cataracts
Among cataracts, there are cases that are difficult to operate on.
When the nucleus cataract becomes severe and the cataract hardens
In the case of hard cataracts, after the anterior capsulotomy step, the hardened lens is removed using ultrasound equipment, then a flexible lens is inserted into the eye using a syringe.
When there is corneal opacity
When there is corneal opacity, surgery is difficult because the surgical field is poor due to the opacity, but surgery is performed using the clear part where corneal opacity has not progressed.
